How JTS Library Helps Us Write Academic Papers About Jewish History
When it comes to the history of Judaism, the JTS library treasures are second to none. Located at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, it was established in 1893 and has been collecting and preserving texts and artefacts ever since. This has been the case even through wars, fires, and other disasters over the years. The library serves anyone looking to learn more about Jewish history through their site, JTSlibrarytreasures.org.
The History Of The JTS Library Treasures
The Jewish Theological Seminary Library Treasures were collected thanks to the first head librarian Alexander Marx, who served from 1903 to 1953. He began collecting contributions from many private collectors, such as Cyrus Adler, Felix Warburg, and Louis Marshall to name a few.
In the 1930's, when many Jewish people were threatened due to war, the Library began to expand in order to protect the knowledge and faith that it contained. At this point, it aimed to become the National Museum of the Jewish Book, and looked to protect and preserve the Jewish cultural experience. The books collected at this point became the foundation of the New York Jewish Museum, and they still remain in the Library's collections to this day.
On April 18th, 1966, the Library suffered a severe fire in its upper floors, where many of their books were housed. In the fire, seventy thousand books were lost and every other book in the building suffered damage, smoke and water damage. Luckily, the rarest books and manuscripts had been held in another area, and so weren't damaged.
After the fire, the Library reopened in September 1966 in a temporary building, in order to resume service as soon as possible. Other books were held in a warehouse in another location during this time. This did make it difficult for the staff to work here, but they persevered until 1983 when a brand new building was completed and opened.
The Future Of The JTS Library Treasures
In 2015, the decision was made to build a brand new library building for the JTS Library Treasures. As technologies have changed so rapidly in the 21st century, the Library needed to be updated to keep up with the times.
As such, right now the Library is in temporary quarters while work on the new library continues. When completed, it'll be the very best for resources, technology, and services. For example, there will be access to both physical and ebook resources, the ability to virtually browse the collections, and lots of space for working in the new library itself.
What The Library Has To Offer
Even if you aren't attending the institution, you can still learn a lot from the JTS Library Treasures, as so much has been made available online to you. You can visit the site at any time and start learning about the Jewish faith and culture.
For example, they have a range of online exhibits that you can view whenever you want. With several video tours and explanatory videos, it's a very good place to start if you want to begin learning. The Library holds a lot of special events too, and even if you're not in New York, you'll be able to check them out as they offer recordings of the events on their website.
Of course, you can also browse through the library's online collections too. These collections will be expanded as the improvements continue, so you'll be able to find out more about what the Library holds, and how these documents inform us about Jewish culture.
As you can see, the JTS Library Treasures are an invaluable resource, and have ensured that Jewish culture has been preserved over the years. With new improvements such as the JTS Treasures website, people all over the world will be able to learn more.
